| Beer was first brewed by the Sumerians almost 8,000 years ago
by fermenting grain in water. This knowledge of brewing a drink that
lifted your spirits quickly spread throughout the world. In the Greek
and Roman empires and the ancient civilizations of Egypt, China, and
Latin America, beer was produced by master brewers and appreciated by
cultures. Medieval monks brewed their own varieties of beer in the
different abbeys and were often famous across the land for their
brewing skills. This historic
tradition was carried into the present now with thousands of
functioning breweries across the world. North America for quite some
time has had a rich history with beer. Native Americans had been
producing fermented drinks from maize and persimmon. Laterin American
history, you can see that many of the founding fathers of the nation
were brewers. By the 19th century breweries were found all across the
country. In the height of beer breweries, there were more than 4,000
breweries in the country. |

| This number fell to 1,568 in January within a few years in
1920 with the beginning of Prohibition. In 1933 after prohibition was
finally repealed, the beer industry started to shift with the increase
in marketing techniques attempting to sell more products.
Anheuser-Busch was one of the first companies to use innovative
advertising and marketing campaigns in the United States. As of 1978,
the popularity of the breweries who advertised were so dominating that
there were only 89 breweries in operation anymore in the U.S., yet they
were producing fewer than 25 nationally distributed brands. Now there
are over 2,000 breweries operating in the United States, and doesn't
even include the hundreds of more imported brands. Beer drinkers enjoy
wearing t-shirts of their favorite beer, and this serves as an
important promotional device for up and coming beer companies that have
a product they want to sell more of. Without visiting a specific
brewery or traveling overseas, these shirts are sometimes hard to come
by. Consumers are not always offered a chance to buy these shirts and
beer companies promote their brands to bars and distibutors. |
